East India Youth at the Belgrave

Again, no food in this post.  Well, a tiny bit. But I have been eating, don’t worry.  I’ll inundate you with munchables soon…but for now, I thought I’d tell you about the gig we went to tonight; East India Youth at The Belgrave.  If you don’t know the Belgrave and live anywhere near Leeds, shame on you – it’s the best bar/club in town.  Friday night is a winner there – it’s free to get into, a laid back vibe and absolute gems playing.

It also has fish and chips, a burger joint and the piece de resistance – a pizza oven!  So no more waiting for a sweaty kebab after a night out (that’s a lie.  I’ve never done that.  Much more of a falafel wrap kinda gal) – you just eat whenever you wish whilst in club!  It’s literally my dream.  My pizza of choice – the upsettingly named ‘Baa no more’.  Ha.  But it is worth the lamby life lost. Pomegranate molasses and lamb mince on a pizza, with some rocket leaves on top….yesss.

Anyway, tonight we saw East India Youth.  It’s a pretty tidy live venue, with a great atmosphere.  Sometimes the lights are a bit shit, and the sound can occasionally be a little unbalanced…but the last gig we saw there, actually was Jungle, ages ago.  And they killed it.  Enjoyed it SO MUCH.  So I’m on a Belgrave music high.

But back to tonight!  East India Youth is one guy (we thought he might’ve recruited some bandmembers for live shows, but no) who plays this weird mix of electro-epic-pop with a strong, almost musical theatre (in the best possible way!) voice.  For an album that seems to have mostly developed from an overwhelming sense of boredom and isolation come some absolutely cracking tunes – the kind that would perk up your day if you blared them into your headphones walking into work, and also the beats that would get thousands of people on their feet and losing it at a festival.  William references neo-classical, Detroit techno, pop and noise as influences – so prepare for all that and more.  I absolutely loved it!  So infectious, you cannot NOT dance…and he is into it even more than you are, headbanging all OVER the shop, so there’s no need to feel silly for doing a little bit of wiggling and jiggling. Phew.
